Nigerian Arrested for Touting in Tokyo's Kabukicho District

On July 9, 2026, Tokyo police arrested 53-year-old Nigerian Nwadiukwu Ikenna on suspicion of touting in the Kabukicho nightlife district, a popular area in Tokyo. Ikenna allegedly approached passersby and attempted to lure individuals, reportedly asking, "Why don’t you scare love?" During police questioning, he admitted to soliciting and stated he received a share of the money spent by customers.

This arrest comes amid a rise in complaints regarding touting activities in Kabukicho, with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department receiving 91 complaints in the first half of 2026. These complaints involved individuals claiming they were charged exorbitant fees, with the total losses reported by foreign tourists exceeding 100 million yen.

Notably, Australian tourists reported losses amounting to approximately four million yen. The number of complaints has already surpassed the 77 recorded throughout the entire year of 2025.
