Tolu Arokodare Defers Starting Role to Coach Chelle

Tolu Arokodare has stated that the decision regarding who starts in attack for the Super Eagles against Madagascar lies with head coach Eric Chelle. This match is part of Nigeria's opening qualifier for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for Friday.

Arokodare, who plays for Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, is one of several options available to Chelle after Victor Osimhen withdrew due to an injury sustained earlier in the month. Chelle has called up Taiwo Awoniyi from Coventry City as Osimhen's replacement, with Akor Adams and George Ilenikhena also available.

Arokodare emphasized that the starting lineup depends on the coach's tactical approach and the players' performances. He has made 10 appearances for Nigeria since his debut in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, starting only once.

Recently, he scored shortly after coming off the bench in Ajax's match against Excelsior but expressed concerns about his fitness after recovering from a fever. Nigeria is in Group L with Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania.
