Seychelles Leads Africa in Passport Power Rankings

According to the latest Henley Passport Index update published on March 9, 2026, Seychelles maintains its position as the most powerful passport in Africa, ranking 22nd globally with visa-free access to 154 destinations. Mauritius follows in 25th place globally with access to 147 destinations.

South Africa ranks 46th globally, allowing access to 100 destinations. The Seychelles government continues to negotiate new visa waiver agreements and has adopted biometric passports to enhance international travel access for its citizens.

Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding mobility remains a national priority for Seychelles. In contrast, Nigeria does not feature in the top ten African countries, ranking 88th globally with visa-free access to only 44 destinations.

The index also highlights that Asian passports, particularly those from Singapore and Japan, are the strongest globally, offering access to 192 and 187 destinations, respectively, without prior visa requirements. Afghanistan ranks the lowest with access to just 24 destinations.
