Colombia-Ecuador Trade War Escalates with Tariffs

The diplomatic rift between Colombia and Ecuador deepened as Colombia recalled its ambassador in response to Ecuador's decision to impose a 100% tariff on Colombian imports. This latest development marks a significant escalation in a month-long trade dispute fueled by accusations of insecurity along their shared border.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed the decision to recall the ambassador, stating it would take effect immediately. The tensions intensified after Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, known for his alliance with Donald Trump, announced the tariff set to take effect in May.

This followed Ecuador's earlier imposition of a 30% tariff in January, which was later increased to 50%. Colombia retaliated with its own 50% tariff and suspended electricity exports to Ecuador, exacerbating the latter's ongoing energy shortage.

The situation has been further strained by Petro's comments regarding the imprisonment of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, which drew backlash from Quito. The ongoing standoff raises concerns about the economic stability of the Andean region.
