New Delhi Hotel Fire Claims 21 Lives, Including Nigerians

A tragic fire at a bed and breakfast facility in Hauz Rani, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, occurred around 8:50 AM on a Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 individuals, including Nigerian nationals. The blaze engulfed the upper floors of the five-story building, which was located near a major medical hub, quickly filling the area with thick black smoke while guests were asleep.

Emergency responders, along with local residents, managed to rescue 40 people, but several succumbed to asphyxiation, and others sustained critical injuries while attempting to escape. Preliminary reports indicated that the deceased included nine individuals from African nations, along with others from Turkmenistan and Bangladesh.

Local officials revealed that the facility operated under severe safety violations, with a single entry and exit point and sealed glass windows, which trapped victims inside. Lavkesh Bajaj, the owner of the building, has been arrested by the Delhi Police, who are conducting a criminal investigation for culpable homicide.

The incident has raised significant concerns regarding safety regulations for accommodations near foreign hospitals.
