Bomb Blasts in Maiduguri Kill 23, Injure 108

On Monday evening, around 7:24 PM, Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, experienced multiple bomb blasts that resulted in at least 23 confirmed deaths and 108 injuries. The explosions occurred shortly after iftar, targeting three locations: the popular Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover Area.

Preliminary investigations by the Borno State Police Command suggest that the attacks were coordinated and executed by suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices. In response, security agencies, including the police tactical unit and military joint security operations, were deployed to the affected areas.

The police's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted sweeps for additional explosive devices. Naziru Abdulmajid, the state police commissioner, visited the blast site to assess the situation, while Nahum Kenneth Daso, the police spokesperson, urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious activities.

The attacks come amid a resurgence of insurgent activities in Borno State, attributed to extremist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.
