Troops Restore Calm After Communal Clash in Nasarawa

On March 25, 2023, troops from the 177 Guard Battalion were deployed to restore calm in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State after a communal clash. The violence began when a vigilant community shot a Fulani youth with a dane gun over a dispute regarding a cow that allegedly ate mangoes.

This incident led to the deaths of two Fulani youths and triggered a reprisal attack, resulting in the deaths of two additional individuals and injuries to five others. The injured victims were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.

Following the clash, security sources reported that houses and properties were set ablaze. The police are currently holding vigilante members in custody as troops maintain a dominant presence in the area to ensure the situation remains calm.

Efforts are ongoing to convene an expanded meeting with the parties involved for further investigation and to apprehend the perpetrators of the violence.
