Trump Administration Bans Birth Tourism with New Order

On Saturday, the White House reaffirmed President Donald Trump’s executive order banning "birth tourism," a term used to describe foreign nationals traveling to the United States to give birth, thereby granting their child U.S. citizenship. Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Adviser Stephen Miller stated that this practice is now prohibited, asserting that no one can obtain a visa for this "fraudulent purpose." Miller characterized the measure as one of the Trump administration's most significant actions, ranking it among the top three in importance.

The executive order follows a previous attempt to end birthright citizenship that was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Miller explained that the administration would distinguish between legitimate tourists and "birth tourists" using provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Trump claimed that "hundreds of thousands" exploit birth tourism, although Solicitor General John Sauer noted uncertainty regarding the actual numbers during Supreme Court discussions.
