Faulty Transformer Explosion in Akwa Ibom Prison Claims Lives of Two Inmates

In Akwa Ibom, two awaiting-trial inmates were electrocuted following a faulty transformer explosion at the Uyo Custodial Center. The incident, confirmed by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), resulted in casualties and extensive electrical damage within the prison premises.

Mr. Frank Okonkwo described the tragedy as deeply unfortunate, with two inmates losing their lives and several staff members sustaining injuries.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) was implicated due to excess voltage surge affecting the entire facility. Investigations are ongoing, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and accountability.
