Clash in Kogi: Two Feared Dead, Festivals Suspended

A violent clash occurred in Kogi State between security operatives and masquerades, resulting in at least two deaths. The incident began on Sunday when security personnel allegedly assaulted a masquerade during the Oganimana festival.

This assault triggered a retaliatory response from the masquerades, leading to security personnel firing shots in an attempt to restore order. One victim, identified as Omeiza, was struck by a stray bullet and confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

In response to the violence, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo directed the immediate suspension of all festival activities across Ebiraland to ensure public safety. Kingsley Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information, stated that the decision was based on credible intelligence indicating that festival activities could threaten public peace and safety.

The governor has instructed security agencies to enforce compliance with this directive and warned that any individual or group organizing related activities would face legal consequences.
