Uba Sani: Rule of Law Essential for Nigeria's Democracy

During an event in Lagos honoring late human rights lawyer Gani Fawehinmi, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani warned that democracy in Nigeria is under threat without a strong rule of law. He noted that the continuous disregard for court decisions fosters distrust in judicial institutions, which weakens the foundations of constitutional democracy.

Sani emphasized that respect for the rule of law is essential for democratic stability, recalling Nigeria's pro-democracy history and the sacrifices made by activists during the political crisis post-June 12, 1993. He paid tribute to Fawehinmi's legacy, which includes a scholarship scheme for indigent students, announcing a donation of N50 million for the initiative.

The event featured remarks from various speakers, including Femi Falana, who praised Fawehinmi's contributions to justice and civic advocacy. Sani also criticized the romanticization of military rule, asserting that democracy, despite its imperfections, is preferable to authoritarian governance.
