Uber to Lay Off 3,000 Workers, Exit Nigeria Operations

Uber is set to lay off more than 3,000 workers globally, which constitutes about 10% of its total workforce, as part of a significant restructuring initiative aimed at reducing management layers and streamlining operations. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi communicated in an email that the company had expanded rapidly, leading to excessive organizational layers that hindered decision-making.

The layoffs will impact both managerial and non-managerial roles, with smaller teams merging into larger units. This restructuring is expected to save Uber approximately $2 billion annually and will reduce its workforce to just below 30,000 employees, a level last seen in 2021.

Additionally, Uber announced it would cease operations in Nigeria effective September 2, as it reassesses its investment focus across Africa. The company is shifting resources to markets deemed more strategically important, marking a significant change in its African operations.
