Uber to Exit Nigeria After 12 Years, Operations End September 2

Ending its 12-year tenure in one of Africa's largest transportation markets, Uber has announced the cessation of all operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026. This week, the company communicated its decision separately to drivers and customers, citing a comprehensive assessment of its business model within the country as the basis for this move.

The ride-hailing platform originally entered the Nigerian market through Lagos in 2014, subsequently broadening its footprint to include Abuja and other major urban areas. It became a dominant player in Nigeria's app-based transportation sector, with millions of commuters depending on it for daily mobility needs while independent drivers utilized the service to connect with passengers throughout multiple cities.

Beginning on the shutdown date, drivers will cease receiving trip requests via the Uber application. Users have been instructed to address any remaining account balances prior to September 23, 2026.

In its parting statements, the company acknowledged the difficulty inherent in this strategic decision and thanked its Nigerian driver community and customer base for their years of engagement. Operational difficulties emerged as a key consideration, particularly mounting financial burdens affecting both operators and drivers.
