Uber Launches Robotaxi Service in London After Nigeria Exit

Uber has unveiled its robotaxi service in London, just hours after exiting Nigeria, where it operated for over 12 years. This launch marks London as the second European city, following Zagreb, to offer autonomous rides.

Initially, fewer than 20 Wayve-powered Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles will be available for passengers requesting UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric, with no additional cost for the autonomous rides. A licensed operator will be present in each vehicle to monitor the journey, with plans for fully driverless operations pending regulatory approval.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, stated that this launch aims to build public and government confidence in the technology. British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called it a major milestone for London’s transport system.

Wayve CEO Alex Kendall noted that London is an ideal location for their AI Driver's public deployment. Uber partnered with Wayve in 2024, investing in the British technology company to deploy autonomous vehicles across various markets.
