UEFA Introduces New Rules for Upcoming Football Seasons

UEFA has released a new set of regulations ahead of the upcoming Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League seasons. The new rules prohibit players from handling the ball within the penalty area following a goal kick, resulting in a penalty being awarded regardless of the player's intention.

Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s head of refereeing, announced these changes during the Champions League draw in Monaco, referencing a previous incident involving Atletico Madrid's Marc Pubill and goalkeeper Juan Musso. Additionally, UEFA has clarified its directives regarding the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), stating that referees must make independent decisions and should not rely on VAR for every incident.

Rosetti emphasized the need for clear evidence for VAR intervention and mentioned new regulations to address time-wasting during substitutions, where players taking longer than 10 seconds to leave the pitch may face penalties. These updates aim to standardize refereeing standards and enhance consistency in decision-making across UEFA competitions.
