Lord Briggs Appointed Next UK Supreme Court President

Michael Townley Featherstone Briggs, commonly referred to as Lord Briggs of Westbourne, has been appointed the next President of the United Kingdom Supreme Court, set to succeed Lord Reed upon his retirement in January 2027. This appointment was approved by His Majesty The King based on the advice of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following a recommendation from an independent selection commission.

Lord Briggs, who has been a Justice of the Supreme Court since October 2017, will be the fifth President since the court's establishment in 2009. His judicial career includes significant roles such as the judge in charge of the Lehman insolvency litigation from 2009 to 2013 and as a Lord Justice of Appeal since 2013.

He has also led major reforms in civil justice, including the Civil Courts Structure Review. His responsibilities have included overseeing the practice and procedure of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council since 2022.
