Man Remanded for Murder of Nigerian in London Altercation

Maxwel Oguanaya, aged 32, has been charged with the murder of Taiwo Ekerin, a 41-year-old Nigerian, following an altercation in Lewisham, London, on May 24, 2023. The Metropolitan Police reported that they received a call at approximately 4:40 AM regarding the incident.

Ekerin was found with serious head injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on May 30. Oguanaya was arrested on June 4 and subsequently charged on June 5, appearing at Ealing Magistrates' Court the same day, where he was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.

He is expected to appear in court again on June 9. Additionally, a second man, aged 34, was arrested on June 5 in connection with the murder and remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Taiwo Ekerin's brother, Kehind Ekerin, confirmed that the assault was unprovoked and has initiated a GoFundMe appeal to help cover funeral costs, expressing profound sadness over the loss.
