UK Offers 3-Year Graduate Visa for PhD Holders

The UK government has announced that international students who complete a PhD or doctoral qualification in the United Kingdom are entitled to a three-year graduate visa. This visa allows eligible graduates to remain in the UK after finishing their studies.

Applicants must be physically present in the UK when applying, and the visa commences on the date of application approval. For non-doctoral graduates, the visa duration varies based on the application date, with those applying on or before December 31, 2026 receiving a two-year visa, while those applying from January 1, 2027 will receive only 18 months.

PhD graduates are exempt from this reduction, maintaining the full three-year duration regardless of their application date. The graduate visa cannot be extended; however, holders may switch to a different immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, to remain in the UK beyond the visa's expiration.

The graduate visa is designed to provide international graduates time to seek employment or explore career opportunities without needing a job offer at the application time.
