UK Raises Concerns Over Osun Election Integrity Issues

The British High Commission expressed concerns regarding vote-buying, voter interference, and challenges related to the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the Osun governorship election held on August 15. In a statement issued on Monday, the commission commended the peaceful participation of voters and congratulated Ademola Adeleke on his re-election.

The commission's accredited observers monitored the election and engaged with various stakeholders prior to the poll, noting positive developments such as timely opening of polling units and effective electoral procedures by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). However, it highlighted isolated incidents that created tension, significant challenges with vote-buying across party lines, and difficulties in providing access for persons with disabilities and elderly voters.

The British High Commission urged relevant institutions to review these challenges to enhance public confidence and transparency in future elections, referencing recommendations from the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room. Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the commission expressed hope that lessons learned from the Osun election would improve the integrity and inclusiveness of future electoral processes.
