UK Sets Out Eligibility Rules and Costs for British Passport Applications

The UK government has published official requirements for passport applicants, including age limits, nationality conditions, and fee structures for first-time and renewal cases.
The British government provides comprehensive guidance outlining who qualifies to apply for passports and what fees apply. To qualify as a first-time adult applicant, three key requirements must all be met: British nationality status, attainment of age 16 or older (including those within three weeks of their sixteenth birthday), and no prior possession of a UK passport.
A fourth category encompasses individuals whose last UK passport was issued prior to 1 January 1994, who similarly follow this application track. Fee structures vary based on both age and how applications are submitted.
For those under 16 years old, costs are as follows: GBP 66.50 (approximately 138,000 naira) for online submissions, or GBP 80 (roughly 166,000 naira) when using paper forms from Post Office locations. Child passports remain valid for five years from issuance.
Only individuals with parental responsibility are able to submit applications for children, and both parents' information must be included in applications. Adults applying for their first 10-year passport must be 16 or older and meet the same nationality and passport history stipulations outlined earlier.
Residents of the UK have two submission options available: online filing or traditional postal paper applications, each carrying distinct fee amounts. British nationals residing beyond UK borders now enjoy streamlined methods for obtaining new passports or updating current ones, eliminating the requirement to travel back to Britain.
An important regulation applies to those holding dual citizenship: names and gender information on any non-British passport must align exactly with the information they intend to register on their new British document. Any inconsistencies between documents must be corrected first.
The official overseas passport application website operated by the UK government supplies all relevant forms and complete information for applicants.
