UK Issues Travel Warning for Abuja and 30 Nigerian States

On August 20, 2026, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning its citizens against traveling to Abuja and 30 Nigerian states due to security risks. The advisory categorizes 11 states as areas where all travel is discouraged, including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara.

Additionally, it advises against all but essential travel to 19 other states, including Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra, and Imo, as well as the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. The FCDO cautioned that no journey could be guaranteed safe and urged travelers to obtain appropriate travel insurance, noting that traveling against official advice could invalidate their insurance policies.

The advisory also includes information on various scams and health risks associated with travel in Nigeria.
