Ukraine Criticizes FIFA President Over Comments on Russian Football Ban

Ukraine's Sports Minister, Matvii Bidnyi, criticized FIFA President Gianni Infantino for proposing the consideration of lifting the ban on Russian football teams in international competitions imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Bidnyi strongly condemned Infantino's remarks, calling them irresponsible and detached from the reality of the war in Ukraine, where children are being killed.

He emphasized that politics should not overshadow sports and that allowing Russian participation would be unjustifiable aggression. The ongoing debate surrounds Russia's future in international sports as FIFA and UEFA's ban on Russian teams remains in place.

Infantino's past ties with Russia, including receiving an award from President Vladimir Putin and Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup, have raised scrutiny. Ukraine's move to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to raise their flags at the Paralympics was also highlighted amidst the broader context of the conflict.
