UN Warns of Extreme Weather Danger from Strong El Niño

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is in a "danger zone of extreme weather" as the current El Niño is projected to be the strongest in over 70 years, with effects expected to last until at least February 2027. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that surface temperatures in the Pacific's monitoring zone have risen significantly, with potential monthly readings approaching 4C above average.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that this phenomenon could severely impact global communities and economies. Indonesia is currently facing wildfires that have burned over 107,000 hectares, while China anticipates seven typhoons this year, with three already causing fatalities.

The Panama Canal has reduced vessel crossings by over 10% due to expected reduced rainfall. Peru, Ecuador, and parts of Brazil are at risk of flash flooding and landslides.

Miguel Aréstegui of Practical Action emphasized the need for action to address structural vulnerabilities exacerbating the impact of extreme weather.
