UNESCO Recognizes CJID's Role in Nigeria's AI Ecosystem

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has recognized the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) as a key player in Nigeria’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, as stated in its 2026 Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Report. CJID was identified under AI Literacy and Inclusion and Public Awareness and Advocacy for its efforts to enhance understanding and participation in AI, as well as to raise awareness of its social implications.

CJID coordinates a Community of Practice within the Nigeria AI Collective, comprising over 600 members from various sectors. In July, CJID awarded grants to seven civil society organizations to support independent advocacy projects focused on AI understanding and responsible technology adoption.

The organization has trained numerous journalists and civil society actors on AI implications and has developed five AI-enabled tools for fact-checking and electoral transparency. In 2025, CJID provided computers to University of Lagos students to facilitate AI learning, emphasizing the importance of digital tools for meaningful AI literacy.
