UNESCO Recognizes CJID's Role in Nigeria's AI Growth

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) for its significant contributions to Nigeria's artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, as stated by CJID's Executive Director, Akintunde Babatunde, in Abuja. This recognition is part of UNESCO’s 2026 Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Report for Nigeria, which evaluates the country's preparedness for AI development and governance.

CJID was acknowledged in two key areas: AI Literacy and Inclusion, and Public Awareness and Advocacy. The organization is noted for expanding access to AI knowledge and promoting civic engagement through media and education.

CJID is a member of the Nigeria AI Collective, coordinating a community of over 600 members from various sectors. In July, CJID awarded grants to seven Nigerian civil society organizations to support independent advocacy projects related to AI.

The organization has also trained numerous individuals on AI implications and developed AI-enabled tools for fact-checking and electoral transparency.
