UNFPA Donates Medical Equipment to Sokoto Hospital

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has officially handed over modern medical equipment for the treatment and management of obstetric fistula to Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital in Sokoto. This initiative aims to improve access to quality maternal healthcare for women and girls.

The ceremony was attended by officials from the Sokoto State Government, UNFPA, development partners, and health professionals. Abubakar Shehu, representing Sokoto State Commissioner for Health Dr.

Faruk Umar Abubakar, described the donation as a significant milestone in enhancing maternal and reproductive healthcare services. Dr.

Rabi Sagir, Team Lead of the UNFPA Sokoto Field Office, stated that the ultimate goal is to eliminate obstetric fistula in Sokoto State through prevention and quality treatment. She emphasized that obstetric fistula is a preventable condition reflecting deeper social inequalities affecting women and girls.

The UNFPA has supported the hospital for many years with funding from development partners, including the European Union and the Government of Canada.
