UNFPA Donates Equipment for Obstetric Fistula Treatment

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has officially handed over modern medical equipment for the treatment and management of obstetric fistula to Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital in Sokoto State, Nigeria. The ceremony was attended by officials from the Sokoto State Government, UNFPA, development partners, and health professionals.

Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, represented by Abubakar Shehu, the Director of Nursing Services, described the donation as a significant milestone in improving maternal and reproductive healthcare services.

He emphasized that the equipment would enhance the hospital's ability to provide quality care to women affected by obstetric fistula. Dr.

Rabi Sagir, the Team Lead of the UNFPA Sokoto Field Office, stated that the agency's ultimate goal is to eliminate obstetric fistula in Sokoto through prevention and quality treatment. She highlighted the condition as a preventable issue reflecting social inequalities affecting women and girls.

UNFPA has supported the facility for years with funding from various partners, urging the hospital to maintain the equipment for the benefit of women.
