University of Benin Student Killed in Shooting Incident

On May 10, 2026, Alexander Omogi, a student at the University of Benin, was shot dead by masked gunmen near the university's main gate in Benin City, Edo State. The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations indicated the shooting was related to suspected cult activities.

The attack occurred around 5 PM when a white GLK vehicle intercepted Omogi's vehicle and opened fire at close range. Two other vehicles were also hit, resulting in injuries to a female passerby, Dorathi Ubah, who was struck by a stray bullet and rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

The police have ordered a full-scale investigation to track down those responsible and have appealed to the public for assistance. Following the incident, tensions heightened on campus, with reports of students narrowly escaping attacks and clashes involving suspected hoodlums.

The university management distanced itself from the violence, clarifying that the incident occurred outside the campus and did not involve its staff or students.
