UNILAG Restores Students' Union After 10-Year Suspension

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially restored its students' union after a suspension lasting 10 years, which began in 2016 due to violent protests that disrupted academic activities and damaged university property. The inauguration ceremony for the new student union leadership took place on Tuesday at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka Campus, presided over by Vice Chancellor Folasad Ogunsola.

This event marks a significant step towards the full return of the union structure, as stated by Dean of Student Affairs Johnson Agunsoy. The newly inaugurated leadership is expected to lead the process towards the formal establishment of a complete student union executive council and parliament by the 2026/2027 academic session.

Vice Chancellor Ogunsola approved a grant of 5 million Naira for temporary office accommodation and refurbishment of an 18-seater bus to aid union activities. Bolaji Akinpelu, the new student union president, described this development as a fresh start and called for a renaissance in student administration.
