UNILAG Reinstates Student Union After 10-Year Suspension

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) reinstated its Student Union after a 10-year suspension, which began on April 24, 2016, due to intense protests over student welfare issues. The Vice Chancellor, Prof.

Folasade Ogunsola, officiated the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Student Union executives, including Bolaji Akinpelu as president, held at Tayo Aderinokun Hall in Akoka. Ogunsola highlighted the significance of this event as a milestone in the university's governance and student engagement framework.

She noted that the previous suspension was necessary due to violent protests that disrupted academic activities and damaged university property. The new leadership is expected to uphold values of discipline and constructive dialogue.

Additionally, the university approved a 5 million naira grant for temporary office space refurbishment for the Student Union. The ceremony featured an oath of office administered by legal practitioner Risqiat Usman and included the inauguration of various other executive positions.
