UNILAG Restores Student Union After Nine-Year Suspension

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially restored its Student Union Government (SUG) after a suspension lasting nearly nine years. The elections for new student leaders for the 2025/2026 academic session were conducted on a Friday, as disclosed in a statement uploaded to the university's website.

The elections were overseen by the Dean, Professor Johnson Agunsoy, and involved the election of Bolaji Akinpelu from the Faculty of Arts as the new president and Daniel Solomon from the Faculty of Computer Science as the general secretary, both securing nine votes. This restoration process follows the indefinite suspension of the SUG on April 24, 2016, due to student protests and unrest that disrupted academic activities.

Vice Chancellor Folasad Ogunsola emphasized that the reinstatement of the SUG is crucial for fostering a vibrant academic environment and promoting student welfare. The university aims to provide a platform for students to express their views and encourages them to become solution-driven leaders.
