UNN Faces Crisis of Decay and Declining Standards

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is experiencing a significant crisis marked by both infrastructural decay and declining academic standards. Recent videos from student hostels, particularly the Eni Njoku Hostel, depict appalling conditions including overflowing toilets, broken plumbing, and filthy bathrooms, leading students to cook outdoors amidst unsanitary surroundings.

The UNN's Quality Assurance Strategic Plan identifies declining academic standards as a principal threat, citing issues such as weak graduate programs, inadequate staffing, unstable academic calendars, and poor teaching conditions. The situation is exacerbated by brain drain, administrative inefficiency, and a gradual erosion of institutional prestige.

Founded by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe with the motto “To Restore the Dignity of Man,” UNN has historically played a crucial role in the intellectual and psychological rebuilding of the Igbo nation post-Nigerian Civil War.

However, the current state of the university reflects a broader institutional crisis that extends beyond mere infrastructure.
