NANS Declares Emergency Over Deteriorating Student Hostels

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) declared a state of emergency on Tuesday in Abuja regarding the dilapidated conditions of student hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Newly inaugurated President Babatunde Akintey described the state of student accommodation as "pathetic" and "disheartening," noting that many hostels have become uninhabitable due to years of neglect.

Akintey highlighted that poor sanitation, inadequate facilities, and hazardous living conditions are compromising student welfare and dignity. He pledged to prioritize student welfare and engage relevant authorities to address the accommodation crisis.

The declaration comes amid rising complaints from students about overcrowded rooms, leaking roofs, and erratic electricity supply, forcing many to seek expensive off-campus housing. Akintey also called for collaboration between the government and student leaders to promote educational reforms and improve the sector.

The leadership of NANS aims to rebuild trust among students and address the challenges facing tertiary education, including infrastructure deficits and insecurity.
