The United States Embassy in Abuja has ended its processing of routine visa applications, requiring Nigerians to travel to Lagos for these services from August 1, 2026 onwards. The diplomatic mission announced the change through its official social media channels in early September 2026, stating that the US Consulate General in Lagos is now the sole location for routine visa operations in Nigeria.

The shift forms part of a broader restructuring of American visa services across the African continent. Those who had already scheduled appointments at the Abuja embassy before the transition date will still have their applications handled, though the embassy cautioned that some appointment dates may have been rescheduled.

The embassy did not specify how many applicants would be affected by the date changes or provide details on how affected individuals would be notified of new appointments. The relocation represents a significant operational change for visa seekers in Nigeria's most populous nation.

Previously, applicants in northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory had access to visa services in Abuja. The consolidation of routine visa processing in Lagos could increase travel time and costs for applicants from other regions seeking to submit applications or attend interviews.

The US Department of State cited enhanced national security and operational efficiency as reasons for the reorganization. No timeline was provided for when this arrangement might be reviewed or reversed, and the embassy did not clarify whether non-routine visa services—such as emergency or diplomatic visas—would continue to be processed at the Abuja location.
