Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, had previously won the inaugural edition of the Finalissima by defeating Italy in 2022 at Wembley Stadium. UEFA had suggested playing the match at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid or as a two-leg event, but Argentina rejected these proposals, leading to the final decision to cancel the match.
