US Pentagon Opens New Military Front in Nigeria to Combat Islamic Terrorists

The US Pentagon has launched a new military front in Nigeria to combat Islamic terrorists as part of a broader campaign across Africa. This initiative involves strengthening Nigeria's security agencies with increased military equipment supply and intelligence sharing.

Following high-level security meetings in Abuja, US officials are focusing on enhancing counterterrorism operations in the region. The approach reflects a shift towards giving African partners greater access to security resources to tackle extremist movements.

The US is particularly concerned about groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria's northeast and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the northwest, notably Sokoto State. The partnership extends beyond Nigeria to countries like Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to address the cross-border movement of terrorist groups.

The recent US airstrikes in northwest Nigeria mark the first known direct military action against Islamic State-linked fighters in the country.
