US to Host 2031 Rugby World Cup Amid Doubts

Alan Gilpin, the Chief Executive of World Rugby, announced that the United States will host the 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup, despite serious doubts regarding the sport's health in the country. The U.S. rugby team is currently ranked 16th in the world and recently suffered a significant defeat against Scotland, losing 85-0.

Concerns have been raised about the ability of the U.S. to deliver the tournament at a commercial level, especially following reports that six teams from Major League Rugby have withdrawn from the competition. However, Gilpin expressed excitement about the engagement from various host cities across the U.S.

The decision to host the Women's World Cup in 2033 is also confirmed, with this decision being made by the World Rugby Council in May 2022. Additionally, discussions at the annual Shape of the Game summit in London included concerns from the French Rugby Federation about potential changes to the sport that could dilute its essence.
