The US Department of State has issued a warning to immigrant visa applicants regarding major life decisions while awaiting their visa interview outcomes. The guidance specifies that applicants should refrain from making final travel arrangements, giving up their current employment, or disposing of property before receiving their visa.

This caution stems from the fact that completing a visa interview does not guarantee approval, and assuming otherwise can leave applicants in precarious financial or professional situations. The Department noted that many visa applications may require "administrative processing" after the interview, which can extend the waiting period without a fixed timeline.

Furthermore, once an immigrant visa is issued, it is generally valid for six months, necessitating timely travel. The warning serves to remind applicants that the immigration process consists of multiple stages, and premature actions could lead to significant disruptions if the visa is delayed or denied.
