Malaysia Backs Iran's Right to Self-Defense Amid Tensions

On Wednesday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed support for Iran's right to self-defense in the context of escalating tensions in the Middle East. He commended Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his efforts to facilitate dialogue between the U.S. and Iran, describing this move as timely.

Ibrahim highlighted the importance of genuine commitment to end hostilities rather than temporary measures to reduce tensions. He reaffirmed Malaysia's stance on Iran's sovereignty, particularly in light of ongoing Israeli strikes against the country and Lebanon.

Ibrahim called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to protect civilian populations and infrastructure in neighboring states, urging Gulf states not to become further embroiled in the conflict. He criticized the uneven application of international law by global actors and stressed the need for a credible, rules-based international order that consistently upholds the right to self-defense.
