JAMB Reports 4,216 Disabled Candidates Admitted in 10 Years

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) reported that over the last ten years, 4,216 candidates with disabilities have gained admission into universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. This information was disclosed by Professor Peter Okebukola, chairman of the Equal Opportunities Group (EOG) and former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), during a stakeholder engagement on inclusive higher education held at the NUC headquarters in Abuja.

The average admission rate for candidates with disabilities is 53%, demonstrating that these candidates can meet academic standards. Beneficiaries include individuals with visual impairments, autism, Down syndrome, and albinism.

Okebukola emphasized that with adequate support, candidates with disabilities can excel academically. The event also focused on the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing inclusivity in higher education.

Additionally, the event marked the unveiling of two books discussing the future of higher education in Nigeria, featuring contributions from 44 scholars.
