Venezuela's Interim Leader Reshuffles Military Command

On a recent date, Delcy Rodríguez, the interim leader of Venezuela, announced a significant reshuffle of the country's senior military command, including the appointment of a new defense minister, Gustavo González López, replacing Vladimir Padrino López. This move is part of an effort to guarantee Venezuela's sovereignty and maintain territorial integrity, particularly following a raid by U.S.

President Donald Trump aimed at capturing Nicolás Maduro earlier in January. Rodríguez expressed gratitude for Padrino's service but emphasized the need for change.

González, who previously led Venezuela's intelligence service (SEBIN) during Maduro's administration, has been criticized for his role in human rights violations, including torture and arbitrary detention. Human rights watchdogs have raised concerns that this appointment may perpetuate repressive structures within the military.

The reshuffle is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the military's loyalty to Rodríguez's interim government as diplomatic relations between Venezuela and the U.S. are set to resume in March.
