Fayose Links Population Growth to Lack of Electricity in Rural Areas

Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, spoke on Friday in Abuja after his inauguration as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency board. He attributed the population growth in rural communities to the absence of electricity, arguing that darkness after 7pm restricts entertainment and recreational options for residents.

Fayose stated that without alternative attractions, people engage more with their spouses, leading to increased population numbers. He emphasized that improved electricity supply would enable residents to remain active later at night, fostering nightlife and recreational activities outside the home.

Fayose remarked, “People go to bed early... if this is the only available recreation, let me remain here,” indicating that addressing the electricity issue could significantly change social dynamics in these communities. His comments were made in the context of the agency's mission to enhance electricity access in underserved and unserved areas across Nigeria.
