Robot Wins Half-Marathon in China, Breaks Human Record

A humanoid robot named Lightning, developed by the Chinese smartphone maker Honor, achieved a remarkable feat by winning a half-marathon in Beijing, completing the 21-kilometer race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This time is six minutes faster than the official human half-marathon record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, held by Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo.

The event showcased Lightning's capabilities as it maintained a steady pace throughout the race, demonstrating no visible signs of slowing down. This milestone marks a significant achievement in China's rapidly developing robotics sector, which has been a focus of government initiatives since 2015 aimed at enhancing the country's technological competitiveness.

The event also featured a humanoid half-marathon with nearly five times the number of competitors compared to its debut last year, although the robot's performance in the human category was modest. The race reflects the ongoing advancements in humanoid robot development in China, which aims to mass-produce stronger robots by 2025.
