Hakainde Hichilema Wins Second Term as Zambia President

Hakainde Hichilema has been declared the winner of Zambia's presidential election, securing a second five-year term with approximately 60% of the vote, as announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia. His main challenger, opposition leader Brian Mundubile, garnered around 38%.

The election, held recently, was marked by violence, disruptions in vote counting, and the arrest of 11 opposition officials amid allegations of plotting an armed insurrection, which Mundubile denied. Despite these tensions, the European Union's observer mission described the election as largely peaceful but raised concerns about restrictions on freedoms and an uneven campaign environment.

Hichilema's victory allows him to continue his economic agenda, which includes attracting investment and expanding Zambia's mining sector, particularly copper production. His first term focused on restructuring Zambia's debt following a historic default in 2020.

However, he faces challenges in improving living conditions for Zambians amid high living costs, unemployment, and electricity shortages.
