Shettima Warns South Africa Against Xenophobic Attacks

Vice President Kashim Shettima issued a stern warning to South Africa regarding xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on Nigerians, stating that the Nigerian government would no longer tolerate such actions. Speaking in Luanda, Angola, before returning to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, Shettima condemned the alleged mistreatment of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

He reminded South Africans of Nigeria's significant historical sacrifices for the liberation of Southern Africa, asserting that those who benefited from Nigeria's support should not subject Nigerians to humiliation. Shettima emphasized that the Nigerian government would not accept dehumanization or degrading treatment of its citizens.

He clarified that Nigeria was not seeking confrontation but preferred to resolve issues through diplomacy and dialogue. Additionally, he urged South African authorities to enforce immigration laws without violating the rights and dignity of Nigerians and other African nationals.
