WAEC Registers 56,000 Candidates for 2026 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced that 56,000 candidates registered for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series. Suleiman Kum, the Head of WAEC’s National Office, disclosed this information during an inspection of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) English Language examination at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre in Lagos.

Among the registrants, there were approximately 272 walk-in candidates. Lagos State accounted for more than 22,000 candidates, including around 50 walk-in candidates.

Kum emphasized that the introduction of computer-based testing in 2024 has significantly reduced examination malpractice, enhanced the credibility of examinations, and promoted transparency. He mentioned that candidates are searched before entering examination halls to prevent prohibited materials.

Kum advised candidates to study diligently and utilize past WAEC questions and marking schemes to improve their performance. The announcement coincided with a leadership transition at WAEC, where Suleiman Kum was appointed as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office in October 2026, following Amos Dangut's appointment as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer effective October 1, 2026.
