WAEC Defends 2026 WASSCE Results Amid Criticism

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) responded to criticism over the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, released on August 5, 2026. Amos Dangut, head of WAEC's Nigerian office, stated that no question papers were leaked and that technical issues did not impact the examination or results.

Approximately 1.96 million candidates from over 24,200 secondary schools participated. During a dialogue on September 3, 2026, organized by the Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN), Dangut addressed concerns from school owners and stakeholders regarding candidates' performance.

He attributed some criticism to individuals affected by WAEC's anti-malpractice measures, which led to a decrease in examination malpractice from 9.7% in 2025 to 8.59% in 2026. He also highlighted logistical challenges due to late school registrations and insecurity, which disrupted the examination process.

Dangut warned that stakeholders must adapt to WAEC's new systems to avoid ongoing issues.
