Super Falcons Frustrated by Lack of Friendly Matches

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are lamenting their poor preparations ahead of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament, as their rivals are actively playing friendly matches. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozi have expressed their disappointment regarding the Nigeria Football Federation's failure to announce fixtures during the current international window, which runs from April 7 to April 18, 2023.

Reports suggest that initial arrangements for friendly matches against Togo and Cape Verde fell through, with Togo reportedly pulling out. Ajibade highlighted the importance of serious preparations for both the WAFCON and the qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Falcons, who are ten-time champions, are facing challenges as they prepare to compete against teams like Zambia, Canada, and Brazil in their group. The WAFCON is scheduled for July 26 to August 16, 2026, in Morocco, and the four semi-finalists will qualify directly for the World Cup.
