WAPP Celebrates 20 Years of Regional Power Cooperation

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) marked its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of regional power cooperation aimed at integrating electricity systems and promoting power trade across West Africa. Established on July 6, 2006, WAPP has made significant strides in developing a regional electricity market within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Major achievements highlighted include the launch of the first phase of the regional electricity market on June 29, 2018, which enabled bilateral electricity trade among neighboring countries. This initiative laid the foundation for a more integrated regional market.

WAPP also announced the inauguration of an information coordination center in November 2023, a significant step toward improving coordination and reliable operations across interconnected regional power systems. Additionally, WAPP noted the importance of regulatory institutions, with milestones including the approval of regional market rules and procedures in November 2025 and the adoption of methodologies for calculating regional transmission tariffs by March 2026.
