El-Rufai Remains in EFCC Custody Amid Corruption Charges

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as investigations continue into allegations of corruption linked to a failed ₦1.3 billion light rail project. An EFCC source confirmed that El-Rufai will not be released from custody anytime soon, as he remains under a security remand order.

The EFCC is reportedly preparing to interrogate him regarding independent corrupt practices related to the project. El-Rufai was invited to engage with the commission, and his legal team described the investigation as professional.

He is expected to be arraigned on three counts of charges filed by the secret police in a Federal High Court in Abuja. The investigation follows his two terms as governor from May 2015 to May 2019, after which he resigned to contest for a senatorial seat.
